For the last two months, Yuga Labs, the firm responsible for BAYC, has been testing a new approach to NFT minting by incorporating games and storytelling. The experiment takes the form of a narrative called “The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey,” which kicked off in December with a brief video. In this storyline, Jimmy triggers a time-space rift when he takes an unexpected bathroom break, releasing an out-of-time ape who presents him with a mysterious key. Unfortunately, Jimmy swallows it by mistake and rushes to the bathroom to try to expel it, only to faint instead.

The UpDAO, a Web3 community, submitted a bid of 690 WETH (approximately $1.1 million) for the key NFT last week. 9GAG, a popular meme website, later made a bid of 999 ETH on the NFT key. But was ultimately outbid by Weitsman, who currently showcases a Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT as his Twitter profile picture.

Nonfungible tokens (NFTs) are blockchain-based tokens that serve as proof of ownership for digital assets. It is similar to what a land deed does for physical property. NFTs aim to establish ownership of digital goods, and most NFT transactions involve the sale of profile pictures, such as those of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. These pictures act similar to digital Rolex watches. Moreover, people frequently purchase them for investment purposes.
