Riot Games will Pay $100 Million to Settle 2018 Lawsuit.

Riot Games, the studio behind the legendary game League of Legends, admits its fault and agrees to pay $100 million to settle the 2018 class-action lawsuit. The report came out last week when Riot Games finally decided to settle the years-old lawsuit.

The amount will settle the lawsuit that alleged Riot Games of the pay gap, gender discrimination, and sexual harassment.

In November 2018, Kotaku broke the story highlighting sexist culture at Riot Games LA office. The story shared details of where women were discriminated against when it came to promotion.

The story also shared incidents of sexual harassment and unwanted sexual advances.

Later, some more employees came forward alleging the company with similar claims. The lawsuit got filed in the same month against Riot Games.

The California Department of Fair Employment said that the suit will redress 1000 women employees and 1300 women contract workers. Besides the settlement fine, Riot also agreed to improve the state of its workplace and make it more all-inclusive and equitable for female employees.

Former employees that were also the plaintiff in the case were ecstatic about the settlement. Jes Negron, a former employee, said, “I am so glad we achieved this first step toward justice for the women of Riot Games.” “I hope this case serves as an example for other studios and an inspiration for women in the games industry at large.

Women in gaming do not have to suffer inequity and harassment in silence – change is possible.”

It isn’t the first time that the settlement was reached on the said lawsuit. Back in 2019, a settlement of $10 million was reached but the involvement of Fair Employment and Housing and Labor Standard Enforcement interfered and opposed it.

Both government departments termed the previous settlement as rushed.
